Government
New Haven is a fourth-class city located in Franklin County, a first class county of approximate 100,000 population. Total population within the city limits was 1,867 in the 2000 census.
New Haven has a city administrator form of government. Municipal government is overseen by an elected mayor and four aldermen.
New Haven is in the midst of an update to its Comprehensive Plan, first approved in 1987. Both city and county zoning ordinances are in effect and date to the 1980’s.
The city recently adopted the 2003 editions of the International Building Codes. More than 98 percent of the city streets are paved.
Local government services: Full-time police protection, water, sewer and natural gas utilities, building code enforcement, trash pick-up, parks and recreation, recycling, snow removal, composting.
Transportation
New Haven is located on Highway 100, a major east-west route in east-central Missouri. Highway 100 traffic counts in the city limits were 6,900 per day in 2002, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.
Interstate 44 is approximately 22 miles to the east. Interstate 70 can be accessed via Route 19 and is approximately 30 miles to the northwest.
Union Pacific railroad runs directly through downtown New Haven.
The Sullivan airport (25 miles south) can accommodate small jets, and the Washington airport (12 miles east) is being upgraded for small jet service.
New Haven is built next to the Missouri River and has a busy Missouri Department of Conservation boat ramp.

The City has approximately $200,000 in general obligation bonded debt, the final payment of which is due in 2008.
Utilities
New Haven runs its own municipal water system, pumping an average of 230,000 gallons per day. Total system storage (two water tanks) is 600,000 gallons.
New Haven has a lagoon facility for wastewater treatment, and is planning to add capacity in the near future.
New Haven runs its own natural gas utility with annual revenues of more than $1 million.
Electric service is through AmerenUE Corporation.
Fidelity Communications provide telephone, high speed internet access and other telecommunications services. Cingular leases a cell tower site in New Haven.
Education
The New Haven School District is fully accredited and employs 57 certificated staff. Total enrollment was 461 in 2004.
Seventy-four percent of New Haven graduates went to a two or four-year college following graduation in 2004. (Forty percent went to a four-year university.)
Among vocational students, fully 100 percent were placed in jobs in 2004.
